I'm actually listening to an internet marketing guru talk about Twitter as I type this. He warns against following too many people and the "I'm following you so you follow me" mentality.
Being protective of my time -- I'm a fan of Tim Ferriss (The 4-Hour Workweek) -- I already feel myself pulling on the reins.
Any thoughts from more experienced Twitterers? I'd guess that those of you who are using this as a communication tool with your downline don't really want to be bothered by the random follower, or by people whose Twits or Tweets or whatever they're called don't do much for you.

Dave,
I don't have enough people I"m following to feel "bogged down" yet. I also can read pretty darn quickly.
Twitter is a place to network. This message board is a place to network. So not sure what the "warning" is. _________________ Audrey

Audrey,
I think his concern is that you can end up following a lot of people who aren't really benefiting you. I'm still getting a feel for how it works myself. I'm somewhat startled that I'm getting followed by people from literally all over the world, who couldn't possibly know enough about me to think that I could say something of value to them.
Anyway, are you using Twhirl with Twitter?

I'm not using Twhirl.
I"m thrilled when people follow. For whatever reason they want to know me. Maybe their motive is hoping I'll buy from them. That's ok. It's another way for me to meet someone.
If you're in MLM, you need to meet other people. You can meet them locally, or you can meet them online. You need to meet new people on a regular basis.
So what if a stranger follows you on Twitter. Say hello. Isn't that how all relationships start? _________________ Audrey

Dave,
I don't really worry about who is following me. I like the spontaneity of Twitter and the viral aspects of how people find you and decide to follow you.
But I have developed a quick method for deciding who I follow back.
1. I check out out their Twitter page and quickly scan through their profile to see what they are posting about.
2. I check out their profile bio to see who they are and then check out their website if they have one listed.
3. I look at their ratio of people they follow versus people who follow them. If they are following a lot of people, but only a small number of them are following them back, I don't follow them. If they seem like a fit with my interests, then I go ahead and follow them.

Audrey and Linda,
Great advice. Thank you.
Here's my contribution. The site twhirl.org allows you to put your Twitter right onto your desktop. You'll never really need to login to Twitter. It just sits there in the background while you're on your computer and let's you know when someone has submitted something. You have full Twitter capabilities right from it.
You can be working on something else, and if someone twits or tweets, you'll know. You can glance at it and ignore it or respond as you choose.

My stategy is very similiar to Linda's. I check their page. If all they ever post is "join me" or "buy from me" I don't follow them. I'm not looking for "friends" who can only talk business. That gets really old for me really quickly. If their page shows other things, I follow them back. You can always unfollow someone later down the road.
I spend my time between two computers, so not sure the twhirl thing would work for me. _________________ Audrey

Dave,
I do use Twhirl, but got out of the habit of using it for a while. I just installed the update and they've made some nice improvements. I forgot how easy and quick it was to make Twitter posts using Twhirl.

Twitter can be used effectively in a number of ways.
One of the most effective for a network marketing leader is as a replacement for unreliable email.
Encourage your downline team, prospects, etc to follow you and subscribe to the different feed types and you can stay in touch very quickly. Better still, it's 100% opt-in and offers several delivery modes.
Open different accounts for different functions or target groups, too.
