NWM => Where Will we BE in 5 YEARS?

Hello Business Associates:

When I first got started in this business, I wasn't the most receptive person in the world when it came to "listening" to those who were successful in Network Marketing//MLM. After all, I was a successful Business and Financial Consultant, with high income, high net worth clients, primarily in the health care and small business fields. I didn't mind the punishing hours or the hard work - I loved the entrepreneurialism - and I loved my counseling work.

SKILLS - In the beginning, I figured that I could simply "transfer" to NWM//MLM - those skills that helped me succeed in my professional life. Was I wrong! I have made a lot of mistakes! I have learned a lot of lessons! I'm still learning. I hope I will never stop learning.

I'd like to share with you some things I have learned so far in my 20 years in this industry, and some of the things I have come to believe about the future (some, controversial).

SUCCESS IS A PROCESS - I have learned that success doesn't jump up and "attack" us. Success is a process. It takes time - and intelligent effort - and belief - and determination - and persistence - and many other vital ingredients.

FAILURE IS A PROCESS too. But I have learned that failure is not fatal. In fact, many failures are simply "lessons learned" (we hope).

ARRIVING - Many people reach a stage in life where they feel they've "arrived". They don't want to change. They are relatively comfortable. They're happy where they're at. Staying 'where I was at' was not really an option which I could select - it was not an alternative. I don't know about you, but some of my hair is turning grey - some of it is turning loose - I'm changing all the time. And what I've discovered is - life is not a static experience.. We're going through space at phenominal speed. This earth is rotating all the time. Things are constantly "changing" in our lives, whether we like it or not.

MOVING ON - We can't stay where we are. That's an impossibility. The economic conditions of our business / profession / where we work - are always changing. They are in a continual state of flux. They are always evolving. The information and knowlege we need, in whatever occupation we're pursuing, is forever changing, in order to remain competitive.

THE QUESTION - So the real question is NOT whether we're comfortable now - the real question is -- where are WE going to be in 5 years - 15 years? - 25 years? Wouldn't it be great if we could just STOP TIME when we're comfortable? When we're finally successful? When we retire? Well we can't stop time. Wherever we are in life, it's tough to 'tread water'. It's like putting a boat in the river and watching it race downstream with the current, and then wanting to shout STOP! It just doesn't work that way, does it?

THE PRESENT - THE FUTURE - We are moving through life. We are either getting better, or worse, every day. There's no stopping it. We need to ask - "WHO is providing direction for our future"? WHO are we relying on for that? We all have a present, and it's different for all of us. Hopefully, we all will have a future. WHO is going to define it? WHAT is that future going to be? We cannot always rely on what we've done in the past - we usually must perform in the present - it's an ongoing process.

Here's one of the toughest lessond I've learned so far...

WORK HARD - WORK SMART - We can work hard and put in long hours right now. Most of us are not strangers to hard work and long hours. I am no stranger to hard work and long hours. But here's my call -- it really doesn't make any difference HOW MUCH MONEY we make "from" that hard work + those long hours. It doesn't matter if we know someone who makes $15,000/Yr --it doesn't matter if we know someone is unemployed and worried about how they're going to put food on the table -- it doesn't matter if we know someone who's earning $1/2 million/Yr.

BEING 'BROKE' - The one thing I have learned about this is -- IF THEY (WE) HAVE TO 'TRADE HOURS FOR DOLLARS' to maintain that income and lifestyle -- if they MUST KEEP ON PERFORMING, to have that $1/2 million/Yr, then THEY'RE BROKE. Yes, BROKE! I'm talking broke in a 'different' sense for this posting. I personally do not believe someone has a lot of SECURITY -- and is doing truly what they want -- if they MUST get out of bed and go to WORK in the morning.

And I apply this 100% to myself, in my own Consulting practice. Yes there are exceptions. They are the people who really LOVE what they're doing, and feel a great sense of accomplishment from their task, and that's great. There's nothing wrong with that. But they're "vulnerable" if that's their ONLY income stream, especially in current economic times - and they're "limited" in what they can ever earn, because again, they're trading hours for dollars - linear income. That applies to me in my practice, and to most other professionals, executives, business owners and other workaholics. We're vulnerable - we're limited - UNLESS we develop additional, PASSIVE income streams. Any CLUES here?

LEVERAGE - I'm not saying that a job or position or career is bad -- or that it shouldn't be appreciated. On the contrary. What I'm saying is, when we HAVE to perform that hard work and put in those endless hours - all by OURSELVES - year after year after year, to keep a lifestyle --then after 10 or 20 or 30 years, we're burned out. We're 'used up'.

Professionals // Business Owners - Most people are on a treadmill - in a rut - spinning their wheels - chasing the almighty dollar ======> through their OWN efforts. There is NO leverage -- and this is especially true for - professionals - the self-employed - (traditional) small business owners. Their relationships suffer - their families suffer - because there's no T-I-M-E left over. Do they need to change direction - and reset their comapsses - for at least the next 5 years?

A BETTER WAY - I've learned that in general, most working people today are "broke". They're broke. I don't care what kind of money they're making. I don't care what kind of occupation they have. They are not secure. If they HAVE to hit that alarm and struggle out of bed each day to MAKE that income, they're broke -- because they're FORCED to 'trade hours for dollars' -- in order to GET the money. That's called ECONOMIC SLAVERY -- and they're broke. Executives in large corporations are still laborers - putting in time - because they have NO CHOICE. They're broke. Someone ELSE is determining their quality of life.

Most people in the world do not have a WAY to work smart. Here's what they do...

-----------------------------------------------------
They put in the effort - make the money - and spend it
They put in the effort - make the money - and spend it
They put in the effort - make the money - and spend it
They put in the effort - make the money - and spend it - year after year after year after year
They put in the effort - make the money - and spend it - year after year after year after year.
---------------------------------------------------------

Can you see what I'm getting at? I know this is controversial. But what's playing out here is -- they're working HARD here -- not SMART.

That is NOT what brings - FINANCIAL SUCCESS -- TIME FREEDOM -- PEACE OF MIND -- HAPPINESS.

But WE have something that can "change" all that -- We have a WAY.

The "B" QUADRANT - It's called NETWORK MARKETING / MLM -- the 'perfect' "B" ((Business Ownership Model -- with "leverage" + "recurring income" potential [Robert Kiyosaki])).

Here's how it goes...

-------------------------------------------------------
We put in the effort
We put in the effort
We put in the effort - make the money - and reinvest it into our business
We put in the effort - make the money - and reinvest it into our business
We put in the effort - make the money - reinvest some into the business + invest some into other assets (( = multiple income streams -- Kiyosaki'e "I" Quadrant (Investments))

We make the money - from different sources - year, after year, after year, after year - - -
We make the money - from different sources - year, after year, after year, after year - - -
We make the money - from different sources - year, after year, after year, after year - - -
--------------------------------------------------------

T-O-O-L - In other words, a Network Marketing ((business)) is simply a VEHICLE that can(through "leverage" and "duplication" and "recurring income") -- produce, not only enough cash flow to take care of all our own needs -- but have enough 'left over' to enable us to develop an Investment Portfolio -- which will itself --produce "additional" revenues for us.

THAT is true Financial Security -- the kind that forces us to accumulate ASSETS -- build up NET WORTH -- acquire real WEALTH over time.

Well I'm still L-E-A-R-N-I-N-G...

-- I'm learning that, what's wonderful here is - the more PEOPLE we help in Network Marketing - the more MONEY we make!

-- I'm learning that, what's amazing here is - the more MONEY we make in Network Marketing - the less HARD we work!

-- I'm learning that, what's 'enviable' to the rest of the world here is -- through the interplay of TIME and MONEY and LEVERAGE -- wrapped up in a HOME BUSINESS of our own -- WE can truly OWN our lives!

-- I'm learning that this is not working HARD -- this is working INTELLIGENTLY!

-- I'm learning that this lesson IS transferrable to others!

-- I'm learning that it's time to decide now - - -

======> Where are WE are going to be in 5 years time?

Through the avenue of Network Marketing//MLM -- let's tell our story to a lot more people -- let's help a lot more people OUT of the rat race.

Hi Peter, You’re a good writer!

Thanks for making me think!

I agree that NWM can help anyone who has enough desire and
intelligence to take action and perform the necessary work of
learning and then applying new skills.

That is the great benefit for anyone involved in NWM. To succeed
in it most people must push beyond their comfort zone and learn
new skills which then can be transferred to other areas of life.

Five years from now most of today’s NWM programs will be history.

But the skills you learn will become a permanent part of you!

Robbert Kiyosaki suggests you look for a company and organization
that helps you to become a better person. Not just learn how to sell
more of a particular product or service.

But when it comes right down to it… most people won’t learn, teach and
duplicate all the skills that makes one a successful leader.

Isn’t that the real product of NWM… developing and growing successful leaders?

Cheers,
Steve Shulenski

Hello Steve:

I agree totally with what you say. In fact, I posted a message back in Nov / 05 on that very issue (leadership).

LEADERSHIP - If your schedule permits, here's the link - - -

The TEAM - The other point you make is a very valid one -- that many (perhaps most) MLMs won't even be here in 5 years, sadly.

Even though it is quite 'controversial' -- this is exactly why I (personally) believe in the wisdom of a) - 'multiple income streams' -- and b)- building a strong TEAM - through competent and caring LEADERSHIP - in part - so that, IF an MLM company "messes up" [for whatever reason] -- we, as a cohesive Team unit can always 'push and play' another company.

Not that any of us ever WANT that to happen ( we don't) - but in the 'real' world - most of us will be confronted with this.

Below, is another message I posted here, about this very real problem in our great industry. As much as I love our industry (and I do) -- we must at times take off the rose-colored-glasses -- and face some realities. As Canada's Executive Director of the DRA (Distributors Rights Association) - I see these issues constantly, first hand.

Appreciate your contribution to this Forum -- and thanks for your nice comments above.

Sincerely / Peter A.

I don't know where NWM is going in the next 5 years. I have been at it for about 5 years and have not had much success. Maybe I have fished in the wrong ponds, but I have come to believe that most people just don't have what it takes to make it in this business.

The drawback is what it takes to make it work requires skills 99% of who are looking to come into the industry just dont have.

The last word is MARKETING... 99% come into this business with no marketing skills....Skills that can take years to develop. I feel like I am an average marketer who has put in alot of time and lost more money than made.

How do we expect people that come into this business for the first time to succeed? How are they going to survive while they learn these new skills?

I feel that there needs to be a shift in this industry...There is NO doubt that the attrition rate is VERY VERY high...People come in and out of this business soooo fast... I recently added 6 people to my downline, and I have supplied them with all the neccessary tools and support to move forward, but it looks like once again all the effort will go in vain as they disappear into the sunset.

The other part of the equation... Net "WORK" .... The work is heavy in the front end and most just don't want to work...

So where does that leave the industry...I believe that the so called "Duplication" is unduplicatable for most...

And has left me wondering what is the answer?
